Cuenca Panama Cowboy Hats are known for their high quality. Cuenca panama is the second best type of panama available. The best quality is Montecristi, which is usually used for dress hats. There are two main processes in creating a panama hat: weaving and blocking. The best way to gauge the quality of the weave is to count the number of weaves per square inch. Fewer than a 100 would be considered low quality. There are many degrees of increasing quality. The rarest and most expensive hats, montecristi hats, can have as many as 1600–2500 weaves per square inch. The second best type is the Cuenca, named for an Ecuadorian city. Although the Panama hat continues to provide a livelihood for thousands of Ecuadorians, fewer than a dozen weavers capable of making the finest "Montecristi superfinos" remain. Panama hats can take up to 4 months to weave. One can compare the weave of the "montecristis", which is extremely fine and regular with that of the "cuencas", which is generally coarser. The Cuenca weaving style is slightly flatter and more open. The finest "cuencas" and montecristis naturally find a home with hat makers who admire beautiful materials and who produce, each in his own manner, the models.
