Cavalry Prince of Wales Spurs

Soldiers who served in combat or are members of a cavalry unit are awarded spurs for a successful completion of a “Spur Ride”. A spur ride consists of mental & physical tests that are held over multiple days. The trooper is evaluated on their leadership, technical, and tactical skills, as well as how well he can adapt to various conditions that come with being in war.
The awarding of spurs dates back to medieval times when knights were said to have earned their spurs by attaining the rank knighthood. The tradition has continued in the modern era as a commendation for individuals in organizations with military heritages. Inductees into the American Order of the Spur receive gold-colored (usually brass) spurs if they have earned their membership through combat, or silver-colored (usually nickel) spurs if they have not seen combat, but have completed a Spur Ride, the spurs are worn according to the regulations set in place by their cavalry unit commander.
The Prince of Wales spur style is the most commonly used among cavalry units. The spurs are to be worn between the upper portion of the sole and the lower part of the heel along the seam of the sole. For married soldiers the shank of the spur should be pointed downwards, single soldier are known to wear them pointed upwards. In the event that a soldier wears their spurs to a cavalry function they must be accompanied with an authorized cavalry hat, spurs and cavalry hats are only allowed to be worn with civilian attire when rank has been removed.
