The kepi cap is most often associated with the American Civil War era. The kepi was formerly the most common headgear in the French Army. The cap style used during the civil war was a more contemporary style which had a sunken top and squared visor. The confederate soldiers wore the grey kepi, while the union soldiers wore the navy kepi.
