Homburg Hats



Beginning in the 1870’s, an increasing number of dress hats were considered suitable for informal wear. The homburg, made fashionable by the Prince of Wales, was a stiff felt hat with a den in the crown running from back to front, and its brim bound with ribbon and coming up at the sides.
Homburg hats material is typically made from wool or fur felt accompanied with a grosgrain hat band and an optional feather. In addition to Edward the Prince of Wales, President Eisenhower frequently wore a homburg during his inauguration; the Homburg was also popularized by Winston Churchill during the 20th century. Following the men’s fashions into the 20th century were the top hats, bowler, homburg, fedora, and tribly. With the exception of the panama, no new men’s fashion appears prior to World War I.
