Soldiers wear a wide assortment of military insignias, ranks, badges, patches, etc. To the uninitiated, the variety can be bewildering. Yet, each military insignia represents a Soldier’s accomplishment—or that of his or her unit— and is a great source of pride and accomplishment. In the U.S. Military services, rank determines who gets to tell whom what to do. The higher one's rank the more authority (and responsibility) they have. U.S. Military personnel fall into one of three categories: (1) enlisted members, (2) warrant officers, and (3) commissioned officers.
Warrant officers outrank all enlisted members, and commissioned officers outrank all warrant officers and enlisted members. "Rank" is a title and denotes the member's level of authority and responsibility.
The first use of Army branch insignias was just prior to the American Civil War in the 1850s. It was at that point that the U.S. Army began developing a series of colored epaulets for wear by officers of various Army branches. The original color scheme was that cavalry officers would wear yellow, artillery officers red, and infantry officers light blue. General officers wore dark blue epaulets.
Branch and rank insignias are normally worn centered on the front of the hat. Rank is worn over the branch insignia. Branch insignia includes standard or regimental branch insignia. Care should be taken when selecting military insignias to avoid gaudiness.
